Rambles

Something socially relevant and deep thoughts, well neither come to mind.  Right now all I can think of is getting out of this office and going home.  Well maybe not straight home. I would like to go by the park, take out my metal detector, and sweep the ground for treasure.  I don’t think it will happen.  Not because it isn’t a viable thing to do, but it is something I want to do.  That means something will happen between now and 4:00 that will require me to go straight home.  Don’t know what it is, or what will be the nature of the emergency…  But it will happen.  I hate being negative but that is how it is.  Seems everyone has days like that, always wondering what is coming next.  I guess the best we can do is count our blessings and hope for the best.

So…

                Here Goes.

My blessings…

My beautiful wife, great kid, good job, sort of good health (I’m alive at least) a little plot of land to call my own, and a home to go to every night.  Seems we take to many thing for granted nowadays, from the food we eat to the people we see on the street.  We assume that they will be there every day never changing, until things do.  A wise man once said that the only thing constant in life is change.  He was so right.  No matter what we do, no matter how far we travel everything changes.

Albert Einstein died with his greatest work unfinished because he couldn’t see the world beyond his own mind. Maybe we can overcome and find the real beauty in the world around us.

Puff passed away…

This morning on the way to work I heard that Mary of Peter, Paul, & Mary passed away from cancer. It saddens me that a great singer and activist has passed in to that great night of death. The station played some of the groups big hits like Puff the Magic Dragon, Leaving on a Jet Plane, and others to remind us who she was, but how could we ever forget?  I am not sure why, but it suddenly hit home that a part of my childhood had died.  The group was part of the protest movement in the 60’s  & 70’s, and part of the peace movement of the 80’s but I just remember them for the simple lyrics and heart string pulling harmony’s of their folk songs.   Puff the Magic Dragon was always my favorite, a simple story about a boy growing up and losing his imagination.  Before we know it this seems to happen to us all, sooner or later.

What did you want to be when you grew up?  Ask anyone you meet and you will rarely find anyone who can tell you with a straight face.  The wistful expression of lost youth and remembered times of play can bring even the staunchest person back to a desire for the past.  A pirate, a fireman, policeman, caped crusader for justice, doctor, a knight fighting a dragon, these were our dreams.  Unfortunately our realities consist of boring jobs, paying bills, and other things that dull our imaginations and deaden our dreams.  I guess Puff really died long ago in many hearts, only to be reborn in every new generation. As I watch my 3 year old son play with his toys, creating worlds out of sticks and abstract items it occurs that imagination is recreated in every new generation through the minds of children.   It is this cycle of death and birth of imagination that we find in Mary’s music and in the story of Puff.

To you Mary, may your songs be forever passed on and never forgotten.  And to all those children of the decades, who grew up with her music, remember to dream of the future and remember what you imagined as a child.

A Good Beginning

I guess the question is why now and not sooner, or maybe later…

Sitting on the sideline and looking for information without contributing has become boring as well as hypocritical.  Having worked in multiple industries to include physical and network security, construction, food, collections, telemarketing, IT in general, and other ladled in here and there just for the experience I figure it’s time I gave back with what I know.  The other issue that pushed me toward this was the general state of our American population.  People everywhere have grown further apart in their daily activities, becoming strangers even to their own families. Even in this hyper connected society, it seems like the person next to you on the bus or in line is more of a stranger than ever.  Being a fan of the Freedom Garden, water conservation, and hybrid electric or bio-fuel systems I’m not a tree hugging liberal, or a hippy, instead I am a simple American who wants to “get along” with my neighbors.

My goal with this blog and site is to inform, stimulate thinking, and create a place where ideas can expounded upon for the good of all human kind.
